Description
A smooth and creamy apple buttercream icing made with softened butter, powdered sugar, apple butter, vanilla, and a hint of cinnamon. It is perfect for cupcakes, cakes, cookies, and fall desserts.

- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1/2 cup apple butter
- 2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream, plus more as needed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Beat the softened unsalted butter with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes, until light and fluffy.
- Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until combined.
- Scrape down the sides and bottom of the mixing bowl with a rubber spatula.
- Add the apple butter and mix on medium speed for 1 to 2 minutes, until fully combined.
- Add the milk or heavy cream and vanilla extract, then mix until smooth and fluffy.
- Add the optional ground cinnamon and a pinch of salt, then mix just until combined.
- Adjust the consistency with additional milk for a thinner icing or more powdered sugar for a thicker icing.
- Whip the icing on medium-high speed for another 1 to 2 minutes, until light and fluffy.
- Taste the icing and adjust the cinnamon, salt, or sweetness as needed before using.
Notes
- Store the apple buttercream icing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
- Let refrigerated icing soften at room temperature, then re-whip it before using.
- Freeze the icing in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
- Thaw frozen icing overnight in the refrigerator, then bring it to room temperature and re-whip before serving.
