Description
There’s something magical about a comforting breakfast that can be enjoyed with family or shared with friends on a lazy weekend morning. Biscuit sausage gravy bubble up is one of those dishes that captures the essence of Southern comfort food while being incredibly easy to prepare. Imagine flaky biscuits smothered in rich, creamy sausage gravy, all baked together in one dish, creating a satisfying casserole that’s both hearty and delicious.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound of breakfast sausage
- 1 can of refrigerated biscuit dough
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 2 cups of milk
- 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
Instructions
- 1. Brown the sausage: In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat, breaking it apart with a spatula. Once browned and cooked through, drain any excess fat.
- 2. Make the roux: Add butter to the skillet and melt it over medium heat. Once melted, stir in the flour, cooking it for about 1 minute to form a thick paste. This is your roux.
- 3. Add the milk: Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Continue cooking until the gravy thickens, about 3–5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- 4. Prepare the biscuits: Open the can of biscuit dough and cut each biscuit into quarters. This allows the biscuits to soak up the gravy and bake evenly.
- 5. Layer the casserole: In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spread half of the biscuit pieces across the bottom. Then, pour half of the sausage gravy over the biscuits. Repeat with the remaining biscuit pieces and gravy. If you’re using cheese, sprinkle it on top.
- 6. Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole for 30–35 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the gravy is bubbling. The cheese, if added, should be melted and slightly browned.
- 7. Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving, allowing the layers to set. Slice into squares, serve warm, and enjoy the comforting, savory flavors.
Notes
- You can make this casserole ahead of time by assembling it the night before and refrigerating it overnight. Then, just bake it in the morning.
- For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the gravy.
- Feel free to add extras like sautéed mushrooms, peppers, or onions for additional flavor.
