Description

French Onion Burgers combine the rich flavors of savory beef, sweet caramelized onions, melted Gruyère cheese, and tangy horseradish aioli in a gourmet twist on the classic burger. Perfect for cookouts or an elevated weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • lb (680g) ground chuck (80/20 blend)

  • 1 packet onion soup mix

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp (28g) butter

  • 1 tbsp (15ml) balsamic vinegar

  • ½ tbsp (6g) granulated sugar

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Toppings:

  • 6 slices Gruyère cheese

  • 6 slices cooked bacon (optional)

  • Baby arugula or butter lettuce

  • 6 brioche hamburger buns

For the Horseradish Aioli:

  • ½ cup (120ml) mayonnaise

  • 1 tbsp (15g) horseradish

  • ½ tsp (2.5ml) lemon juice

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • Dash of salt

Instructions

  • Make the Aioli: Combine mayonnaise, horseradish, lemon juice, garlic, and salt in a bowl. Mix and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  • Prepare Patties: Gently mix onion soup mix with ground chuck. Form 6 patties, pressing an indent in the center. Cover and set aside.

  • Caramelize Onions: In a skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add onions and cook until they begin to brown. Add sugar and vinegar, season, and cook for about 15 minutes until golden and soft.

  • Grill Patties: Preheat grill to medium-high. Grill patties for 3–4 minutes per side to desired doneness. Add cheese in final minute. Let rest after grilling.

  • Assemble Burgers: Toast buns if desired. Spread aioli on the bottom bun, then add the patty, bacon (if using), onions, and greens. Top with bun and serve.

Notes

Mix meat gently to keep patties juicy.

Let onions caramelize slowly for best flavor.

Substitute Gruyère with Swiss or provolone if needed.

Burgers can be cooked in a skillet instead of a grill.
