Description

A cozy and crave-worthy fusion of grilled cheese and sloppy joes. This sandwich features melty cheese, savory ground beef, and a rich, tangy sauce all tucked inside crispy, buttery bread. Perfect for a comforting meal!

Ingredients

  • Ground beef (lean)

  • Onion (finely chopped)

  • Garlic (minced)

  • Tomato sauce or ketchup

  • Worcestershire sauce

  • Brown sugar

  • Mustard

  • Cheese (cheddar or American)

  • Bread (thick slices like Texas toast or white bread)

  • Butter (for grilling)

Optional:

  • Bell peppers

  • Jalapeños

  • Other cheeses (mozzarella, pepper jack, Swiss)

  • Turkey or plant-based meat

Instructions

  • Cook the meat: Heat a skillet on medium. Add a little oil. Cook ground beef and chopped onions until the beef is browned. Drain any excess fat.

  • Add the flavor: Stir in garlic, tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Let it simmer for 10 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.

  • Prepare the bread: Butter one side of each bread slice. Place the unbuttered side down, add a slice of cheese, top with the sloppy joe mix, add another slice of cheese, and place the second slice of bread on top (buttered side up).

  • Grill the sandwich: Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Grill the sandwich for about 2-3 minutes on one side, flip carefully, and grill the other side until golden and the cheese has melted.

  • Serve: Remove from heat, cut in half, and serve while warm and gooey.

Notes

For a lighter version, use lean beef and whole grain bread, and opt for a lower-fat cheese.

You can make the sloppy joe filling ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days.
