Description
Classic creamy Potato Gratin with layers of tender potatoes baked in a rich Gruyère cheese sauce until golden and bubbling.
Ingredients

- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1½ cups milk
- 1½ cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
- Pinch nutmeg
- Salt and pepper
- 4 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Cook onion in butter until soft.
- Add garlic and thyme.
- Whisk in flour.
- Add milk and cook until thickened.
- Stir in 1/2 cup cheese.
- Season with nutmeg, salt and pepper.
- Layer potatoes with sauce.
- Top with remaining cheese.
- Bake 45 to 60 minutes.
- Rest 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use heavy cream for a richer sauce.
- Try cheddar, Swiss, Havarti or Parmesan.
- Russet and Yukon Gold potatoes both work well.
- Add cooked bacon for extra flavor.
