Description

Jalapeño-Onion Smash Burgers is a bold and flavorful twist on the classic smash burger, featuring juicy, crispy beef patties smashed onto a hot griddle with thinly sliced onions and jalapeños. These burgers are topped with melty cheese and served on a toasted brioche bun with your favorite condiments for the perfect balance of heat, crunch, and savoriness.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Burgers:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1–2 jalapeños, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices cheddar or pepper jack cheese
  • 4 brioche or hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting buns)

For the Toppings (Optional):

  • Mayo or spicy aioli
  • Mustard or ketchup
  • Lettuce
  • Pickles
  • Tomato slices

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients:

    • Thinly slice the onions and jalapeños.
    • Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape them into loose balls.
  • Toast the Buns:

    • Heat a griddle or skillet over medium heat.
    • Butter the buns and toast them until golden brown. Set aside.
  • Cook the Smash Burgers:

    • Increase heat to high. Place the beef balls on the hot skillet.
    • Immediately top each ball with a handful of sliced onions and jalapeños.
    • Using a heavy spatula or burger press, smash the patties down as flat as possible.
    • Cook for about 2 minutes until crispy and browned on the edges.
  • Flip and Melt the Cheese:

    • Flip the burgers and immediately place a slice of cheese on top.
    • Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and the edges are crispy.
  • Assemble the Burgers:

    • Spread mayo, spicy aioli, or mustard on the toasted buns.
    • Place the smashed burger on the bottom bun and add lettuce, pickles, or tomato if desired.
    • Top with the second bun and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra spice, use serrano peppers instead of jalapeños or add hot sauce.
  • Don’t press the burgers after flipping; this keeps them juicy.
  • Use a cast-iron skillet or flat-top griddle for the best crust on the patties.
